about mental disorders.
Mental disorders are serious mental health conditions that span over several categories of brain, personality, identity, etc affecting disorders. Widely known mental disorders that even you probably know would be: Kelptomania, Pyromania, Schizophrenia (which is a seriously debilitating disorder that affects a person's attachment to reality among other things.), Antisocial Personality Disorder (socio/psychopathy), among others. Although many people who aren't psychologists or psychiatrists know of these, they aren't going to be experts on any of the subjects. Note that you are in no way responsible for diagnosing anything in yourself or others unless you have a degree in either of said professions (even if you do have a degree in either, it is dangerous to diagnose yourself as you could [and probably are] biased on the subject.)
In the world of fiction, your character could have any array of disorders without having to be diagnosed professionally and you don't have to be a professional on the subject. In this way, mental disorders can be abused by the player and played utterly wrong and disturbingly ignored by who is being role-played with. If you do not know how to have your character react to another with a mental disorder, look up the mental disorder and then reply. If your character is somewhat mentally retarded, they may ignore it because they didn't see a purpose in it; they may have not seen anything wrong with it.
Before you try to play a character with a mental disorder, you must actually know something about it and how to play it. Here's what I mean:
At times, a person with Schizophrenia will repeat actions because their thought processes are very disorganized. So much that it may cause them to forget what they did only seconds before. Now, if you didn't know this and made your character think perfectly normally, never repeating a single action (which can happen!), you would not be playing the disorder as it should be.
Of course, other characters wont know why this is happening and the character themselves wont. Never imply that your character has been diagnosed by a psychologist or psychiatrist if they are an animal (as a human or half-human, that would be perfectly normal but if [as in these circumstances] you state that your character has been diagnosed and everyone knows what this disorder is, you'll be defying logic.)
If your character prefers not to speak (which is a very bad idea) do not make them speak to spice up the role-play. Or, at least, make them speak little or describe that they honestly don't want to and make them periodically try to dodge out of the conversation at hand.
